About

Majestic Grandeur at Southeast Asia's Largest Place of Worship

Located on Jalan Taman Wijaya Kusuma in Central Jakarta, right across from the National Monument (Monas) and the Jakarta Cathedral, Istiqlal Mosque stands as the national mosque of Indonesia. Built to commemorate Indonesian independence—with "Istiqlal" translating from Arabic as "Independence"—the groundbreaking ceremony took place in August 1961 under President Sukarno, and the grand mosque officially opened for worship on February 22, 1978. The monumental structure was designed by Frederich Silaban, a Christian architect who won a nationwide architectural design competition held in 1955. The mosque complex covers a sprawling 9.5 hectares and features a modern architectural style characterized by clean geometric lines, white marble cladding, and monumental domes. The main prayer hall is capped by a massive dome measuring 45 meters in diameter, symbolizing the year of Indonesia's independence (1945), supported by twelve colossal circular columns wrapped in stainless steel. The single soaring minaret reaches a height of 96.6 meters and is topped with a stainless steel pinnacle. Istiqlal can accommodate over 200,000 worshippers across its multi-tiered balconies and vast courtyards, and it is famously connected to the neighboring Jakarta Cathedral via the "Tunnel of Tolerance" to symbolize religious harmony. The mosque welcomes local and international visitors daily, including non-Muslim tourists who can join guided tours outside of regular prayer times. Modest attire covering shoulders and knees is required for entry, and visitor guidelines ensure a respectful environment. Positioned in the heart of the capital city, Istiqlal Mosque offers an inspiring, architecturally stunning, and culturally profound experience for history enthusiasts, travelers, and architecture admirers.
